Montana sales tax rates by ZIP code
No general sales tax. Some resort communities levy a local option tax, but those are not general sales taxes and are not in this file.
Counts and the combined rate range are drawn from our October 2026 file. Rates change monthly.

What's in the Montana rate file
Montana data ships inside every edition — we do not sell single-state files. Each row carries the ZIP code, county and city name, the rate at each jurisdiction level, the combined total, and whether shipping is taxable. The higher editions add district reporting codes, FIPS codes, effective dates and sales tax holiday windows.

How local tax works in Montana. No general state or local sales tax. Qualifying tourist communities may levy a local resort tax of up to 3%, enacted by local ballot and administered entirely by the municipality or resort area district, not the Department.
Worth knowing. No sales tax registration, returns or rate tables exist at state level. The only sales-type taxes are local resort taxes in a handful of certified resort communities such as Whitefish, Big Sky and West Yellowstone, where you register with the town directly.
Questions
Montana sales tax questions
What is the sales tax rate in Montana?
The statewide base rate is 0%. Montana does not levy a statewide sales tax. There are no local sales taxes either.
Is shipping taxable in Montana?
Generally no. In Montana a delivery charge is not taxable, and combining it with handling does not make it taxable.
That distinction catches people out, which is why our file carries both flags — TAX_SHIPPING_ALONE and TAX_SHIPPING_AND_HANDLING_TOGETHER — on every row, for the specific jurisdiction. Your system doesn't have to encode the rule.
How many sales tax jurisdictions are there in Montana?
None — Montana has no county, city or district sales taxes, so the state rate is the entire rate across all 404 MT ZIP codes. That is rare, and it is why a single statewide number is safe here and almost nowhere else.
